About me

I joined the Miami faculty in 1997 after a 15-year career in the newspaper industry. Now area coordinator and senior lecturer in the Journalism Program in the Department of Media, Journalism & Film, I teach an array of courses; handle administrative tasks; coordinate special events; chair the Committee on Student Media Organizations; and serve on various committees. On the teaching front, I’ve created a range of different courses including ones related to ethics, business journalism, the media business, investigative reporting and Freedom Summer 1964. I’m the founding director of Miami’s NYC Media travel course and Media Matters high-school recruiting program. I’ve also taught with Miami’s “Inside Washington” program twice and in Cuba once. During my newspaper years, I worked mostly as a business reporter, editor and columnist for 10 papers in seven states, with about half of those years at The Cincinnati Enquirer. I continue to write occasional freelance pieces; support the Society of Professional Journalists, as immediate past president of the national board; and participate in community initiatives. I earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and live in Cincinnati with my husband, Doug. We are the parents of three adult children (Frances, Arthur and Beatrice) and two faithful basset hounds (J.J. and Winston).
